The rise and fall of Harlequin

This is an incredibly fascinating article and about the rise and fall of Harlequin. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/currency/2014/05/what-happened-to-harlequin-romances.html

The line that says it all to me is, “Still, according to Digital Book World, in 2013, there were ninety-nine self-published e-book best-sellers. Harlequin, in comparison, only had twenty-one.”

Will Harlequin reclaim its top spot? I don’t know, but like millions of other people I’ll be watching to see.

People still read, they just do it differently now

The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that 83% of Americans aged 16-29 had read a book in the past year, and 60% of them used their local public library.

It found that of Americans under 30 who read a book, 41% of them read it on their cell (mobile) phone and 55% on a computer.

The Romance Writers report asked romance readers about their habits. 91% of romance buyers are women, about half of romance buyers are between the ages of 30 to 54, and 94% of romance readers have read ebooks (either purchased or free).

So yes, people are still reading books, a lot of books, but the way people read them is changing.

A Eulogy for a Library

I can see both sides of this story. I grew up with books, learned to read before I even started school and have always had a passion for books and reading.
Yet on the other hand I love the idea that I can have a hundred books on my flash drive and read them anywhere. No more storage problems. No more being stuck waiting for someone with nothing to read. No more having to carry a heavy bag of books on holidays (vacation).

An excellent article, worth reading and thinking about.
